Searching for a face lifting device brings up everything from €30 gadgets to €2,000 Japanese flagships. Price alone does not tell you much. These seven questions do.

1. Which technologies does it use?

Microcurrent or MFIP and EMS work with the facial muscles - choose them for the contour. RF warms the skin - choose it for the feel of firmness and texture. LED adds a step for the look of the complexion. Devices that combine several technologies in one head cover more in one session.

2. How many electrodes, and how big is the head?

More electrodes spread the current more evenly over a larger area. A large head suits the jaw and cheeks; a small 3-4 cm head is better for the eye area and the nasolabial zone. Some people end up with one of each.

3. Wired, cordless or app-controlled?

Wired flagships such as Dr. Arrivo Zeus II deliver a steady output without battery worries. Compact cordless models such as Clione fit 2.0 are easier to handle and travel well. App-controlled devices such as Zeus IV and CronuA guide the routine and track your sessions - helpful if you tend to forget.

4. Is the gel or serum included?

Microcurrent, EMS and RF need a conductive gel. A set that includes the matching gel and serum is ready to use and avoids the most common beginner mistake - working on dry skin.

5. Will you actually use it?

The best device is the one that fits your week. A ten-minute routine three times a week beats a forty-minute ritual you skip. Weight, noise, charging and how easy it is to switch modes matter more than the spec sheet.

6. Is it genuine, with a real warranty?

Popular Japanese devices are widely copied. Buy from an authorised distributor, check that the serial number on the device matches the warranty card, and be wary of prices far below the market.

7. What does it cost per session?

A €1,200 device used three times a week for three years costs well under €3 per session - less than a single salon visit. A cheap device that stops working after a few months is the more expensive choice.
